Hey ya’ll! A lot of bookshops are getting really creative in how they operate during this outbreak, but they’ll still likely be taking a hit from all this. We can’t afford to let any more indies go out of business, so I’m making a list of announcements and special services from shops. I’m only one person, so please feel free to contact me on social media (@quietkindblog on all platforms) or add to this google doc! As you know, things change super quickly – it’s a good idea to double-check this info on your own!
Don’t really have a “local” bookshop? Now is also a great time to expand your idea of “local.” A great way to support small bookshops anywhere in the world is by purchasing a gift card. Our friends at Shelfjoy have started a great list of shops selling gift cards - please check it out! Gift cards act a bit like a teeny loan - while you don’t have to use the card right away, your bookshop can use the money you spent on the card for immediate expenses. A lot of small businesses are also dedicating a portion of gift card sales to go directly to employees who will be losing hours or incurring additional expenses during this time.
Can’t afford to spend money right now? I’m including social media links as well – now’s a great time to make sure you’re following all your favs and give them a share to spread the love (but not coronavirus).

Books with a Past - Coronavirus update, what a year this week has been edition:
In the last week, the reality of the coronavirus outbreak has really begun to sink in. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we all need to do our part to flatten the curve and protect our communities. To that end, Books With A Past will close to the public at 5:00 on Saturday, March 21.
Don’t get us wrong, we still want and need to sell you books. We’ve been crunching the numbers and examining our bank accounts, and we want to be transparent about what it will take to keep this small business afloat during this crisis. Bare minimum, we figure we need to make about $7500 per month ($3750 per store) to keep us going until we can reopen. This number includes inventory costs, rent for both stores, utilities, insurance, and a small amount of payroll for a skeleton crew. All bills that can’t be pushed back until we reopen. With the loss of browsing in both stores, plus the bulk of our tutoring sessions while school is out (though stay tuned, we’ll start offering virtual options for this), we’re getting creative. If you would like to support us, and keep busy while you’re social distancing, here are some options.Curbside pick up (by appointment), $1 shipping, some cool curations on their Instagram account, and virtual story time every Tuesday and Thursday on their Facebook account!

Square Books: “Mississippi has been among the last states to entertain the Coronavirus, and it has now become necessary to understand how it may affect us and wise to take precautions. While human health is everyone's chief concern, many independent or local businesses have begun to feel the effects of lower traffic and diminished sales. Small businesses are rarely flush with cash, and thus can be severely and quickly harmed by even a brief recession. As I write this, Square Books is not struggling, but chances are good that it may struggle. We wish to emphasize how important it is to support local businesses of all kinds at this time, and some of the details below about Square Books details apply to other local businesses as well. Nothing is more important than the safety and health of our staff and our customers. Those who come to any of our four locations on the Oxford Square -- which remain open our standard hours until further notice, if necessary -- will be greeted by staff with a brief written note of common-sense precautions, and, upon leaving, a copy of this message.
Those who have reduced social activity are encouraged to visit and order books from our website www.squarebooks.com.
Our media mailing charge is now free, as many are choosing to do business this way.
Within a five mile area of Oxford, we offer free delivery.

We will stay in touch via newsletter and social media with book suggestions and updates. We are asking that no one come to pick up if they are sick or have been in contact with anyone that is sick. In those cases, we are happy to ship /deliver orders to you. We want to help make this difficult time as healthy and safe as possible. As always, we hope you're reading something good. We'd love to know what you're reading and how you're doing during this uncertain time. Send us an email or tag us at @browsersbooks. With books and our community of readers, quarantine doesn't have to be isolating. Thank you for your continued support.

Librarie Drawn and Quarterly: Please be advised that we have closed our bookstores to the public and we’ve moved all of our sales online.
In times like these, browsing for books in a physical space (as much as it is beautiful and nothing beats it) isn’t the safe choice for our staff or our community at large. Our website is now offering online sales via Bookmanager or Les Libraires. You can also support our bookstore directly by purchasing audiobooks via our page on Libro.fm. We’ll be shipping books or you can pick up your prepaid books just outside of our children’s store (176 Bernard West). We have a secure spot to avoid all contact and we ask that customers stay at least 2 meters away from each other while fetching your books. You can browse and order books from both of our stores’ inventories, but pick up will be via mail or happen exclusively at La Petite Librairie D+Q, our children’s location.
Staff will be on site at our Children’s location from noon-5pm daily to help facilitate shipments and pickups. Please call (514-279-2279) or email (librairie@drawnandquarterly.com) with your ETA and we’ll make sure the package is wrapped with your name on it and ready in between the doors for you when you stop by.
Much love and care to everyone! A great big virtual hug to you all!❤️❤️❤️

o Bison Books: “We are endeavouring to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, and we are committed to upholding the standards recommended by all levels of government. For now we are maintaining our usual hours, 10-5:30 Monday to Saturday, but this is likely to change as the local situation shifts. We remain committed to serving our community, and supporting our employees and customers. For now, that means maintaining our distance, regularly disinfecting surfaces, minimizing staffing, controlling the number of clients in the shop at one time, monitoring ourselves and the community’s needs. We encourage anyone feeling unwell to stay home, and recommend social distancing for all. We are now offering curbside pickup, or free hand-delivery within 10 km (ish) of the shop, with delivery available at cost to the suburbs and everywhere else in the world. o Pagdandi Bookstore Café: “Dear Patrons, We have made the difficult decision to temporarily close for service to prioritize the health and safety of our team, our guests, and our community. This is new territory for all of us, and we are making decisions with both our hearts and our minds. o Kenny’s Bookshop: “Update on our services due to Covid-19 & Coronavirus
16 March 2020
A chairde,
We are continuing to take and ship book orders made on our website, www.kennys.ie. An Post delivery services are still operating as normal for customers in Ireland, and our couriers and suppliers are also continuing their services. We are really appreciative of all support of Kennys, and if you are shopping for books during this time, please consider that we offer free delivery worldwide on all books, with new and secondhand books available starting at less than €5. You can also contact us on books@kennys.ie and +353 (0)91 709350.
While we continue to accept and process online orders, in the interest of the safety of our staff and our customers and in order to help contain the spread of Covid-19 and the Coronavirus, we have decided to close the retail bookshop and art gallery in Liosbán Retail Park, Galway until future notice. All of our art gallery stock can be viewed online on www.thekennygallery.ie and any art related queries can be directed to us on art@kennys.ie.
We are, and will continue to, follow national guidelines in relation to this crisis. We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support, and wish everyone well during these strange times.
Bígí sábháilte, Keep safe.”

o Curious Fox Books: We were informed this morning that someone in attendance at our last "Isn't everything poetry?" on March 3rd had contact earlier that day with someone who has since been confirmed to have covid-19 and that they themselves are also now confirmed to have the virus (though they can't be sure of the timeline). We've made the decision to keep the shop closed, despite the government's U-turn on bookshops being allowed remain open. It does not seem safe or responsible under the circumstances.
We will not be processing orders for shipping, local delivery or collection right now. We ask anyone who attended "Isn't Everything Poetry?" on 03 March to be aware of the covid-19 symptoms and to contact their doctor if they're suspicious. Please note, as this was more than 14 days ago symptoms would have developed by now.
